Genius is the story of three friends Nivas(Havish), Yasir (Ashwi n Babu) and Jeeva (Vinod)who ruin their lives for trusting, following and inspiring from three influential aspects Cricket, Movies and Politics. The three were deceived by their role models and as a result their lives and families get spoiled. How they take revenge and what message they give to the society has to be watched onscreen.
Analysis:
The movie starts off well with a bang in the police station and eventually gets interesting with a series of murders of hero’s friends who were killed under mysterious circumstances. In the beginning, it leaves an impression that director Ohmkkar is in a hurry to complete the songs which are coming too fast thus hamming the narration. However, it gets better when Sarath Kumar enters the scene as a powerful police officer. The confrontation scene between him and local MLA JP (Jaya Prakash Reddy) is etched very well. Also, there is some comic relief in the middle with Brahmanandam performing the spoofs of famous songs from Pawan Kalyan’s ‘Gabbar Singh’ and Chiranjeevi’s ‘Mutha Mestri’ in the form of ‘Aata’ reality show. Director has tried to establish the characters in the first half and so far succeeded in maintaining the suspense with a beautiful interval bang.
The second half starts flat post interval and gets deviating with a poor screenplay as it goes. The flash back episodes make you think, shed tears and emote well. But, the treatment given at the end disappoints and sends wrong message to the society. If an individual turns against to his idol does that mean he can take law into his hands? Mr Ohmkkar what message you are giving to the society? The theme is good but we differ with your solution or punishment to kill and die at the end as it is misleading the society.
Other side, Ohmkkar should be appreciated for choosing a contemporary plot that is laced with the details of nuances in the society. But, the solution he has given at the end is not acceptable. Overall, Genius is a movie that has been made with not so 'Genius' effort. It's not everybody's cup of tea!
Perspective:
‘Genius’ reflects the mindset of several people who were deceived, go overboard and madly follow and worship their favorites. The message in the story is not convincing and the verdict too is not praise worthy. The fascination of youth in movies, cricket and politics will only end up in ruining their careers if they lack proper thinking. Director Ohmkkar who shot to fame with his marathon reality shows has put his heart out and chosen a wonderful plot. The movie goes on a serious note and is good in parts. To name few, the episode where Kotayya seeks help of Pedababu, Sri trying to enlighten Nivas on his trust on Nanaji , Saleem scolding his son Yasir on his birthday are heart touching. Lastly, 'Genius' is a stale effort that leaves you in confusion and leads you towards a wrong conclusion.
Performances:
Havish has shown lot of maturity, variations in his expressions and has done a commendable job throughout. His performance is first rate and he suits the bill perfectly. Ashwin Babu and Vinod have succeeded to bring emotion and their performances are fantastic. Kota and Annapurna are amazing. Sarath Kumar and Nagababu have delivered a decent performance. Chandra Mohan, Sanusha, Jaya Prakash Reddy, Tagubothu Ramesh played their part well. Suman, Abhinaya, Subhalekha Sudhakar are OK. Anitha, Swetha Basu Prasad and Rekha Sizzles in an item number.
Technicalities:
Positives:
